The title of the presentation was “Unknown Trajectories.” For the first time in my presentation, I will talk about the machine I flew…Silent Flight!

There are approximately 476,000 pilots of all grades in the United States, and an additional 280,000 student pilots…fewer than 25,000 people hold the grade of glider pilot, and of those who do so, fly more than 50 hours a year. It is estimated that there are fewer than 2,000 pilots…glider guides who are serious about cross-country flying in these gliders/sailplanes. I had never flown in an airplane before and learned to fly in a glider in the fall of 1996. 11 years and 1800 +/- hours of flying time later, this was all I knew and cross-country flying was my life…this continued until I switched to motorgliders in July 2007. and many more over the next 13 years.

I took my first cross-country flight in 1997. The distance was relatively short, over 50 km. About a quarter of the way to the destination, I lost the final glide to the takeoff point and couldn't make the final glide to the destination… It was really hectic. The only way to get to your destination was to use the skills you learned to find and move the elevator you needed to get there. I was totally hooked on glider XC flying…and he's still hooked now that he got out of active XC soaring three years ago.
