MSNBC host Lawrence O’Donnell claimed Tuesday that former President Donald Trump had “put bribes on the bench” of judges hearing federal criminal cases.
“There’s a bribe on the defense table,” O’Donnell said before Trump spoke at a club in Bedminster, New Jersey. “When Donald Trump becomes president, there will be a Supreme Court nominee. If you, Mrs. Justice, can help me become president again, this is it. Federal District Judge Eileen Cannon, whom President Trump appointed to the federal court in May 2020, will reportedly preside over the case. Cannon ordered the appointment of a special master to review documents seized in the Aug. 8 raid in Mar-a-Lago, Fla., owned by Trump, a ruling that was later overturned on appeal.

Mr. O’Donnell argued that judicial ethics required Mr. Cannon to withdraw from the trial.
“One of the questions we forgot to ask at the Senate confirmation hearing was, ‘Are you going to preside over the criminal trial of the president who appointed you?'” O’Donnell said. “And the answer is, obviously, don’t.”
