Hats off to Cam on this one. This was a great apology.
Former Carolina Panthers and New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton addressed his viral game video on his YouTube channel Friday and apologized to everyone involved.
“My heart goes out to everyone who played a role and supported me from start to finish, but we have to be better, and that starts with me,” Newton said. said.
Newton accepted responsibility for his role in the brawl and revealed that the assailant was a coach within his C1N football camp organization.
“It just started with words and should have ended with words, and that's fine…I'm disappointed in myself for allowing it to escalate to what it is. So I'm going to respond to that. I'm apologizing,'' Newton admitted. “I've seen the clips over and over again. I've seen the content they've put out, etc. The truth of the matter is this: Since I'm in the position I'm in, I wouldn't put myself in a position like that.” It shouldn't have been put there, that's the truth.”
“I feel like I let them down because I can't sit there and say, 'Hey, brother, you should be bigger.' And then all of a sudden you do that. It's like you're always there. It just shows you that you have to be in control of your emotions,'' Newton insisted. “And that's where the humanitarian side stepped in, and there's no excuse…not really, because it could have been a scuffle.” There's no potential for more violence to ensue from that. There is, but it's anything and it's not asked for. ”
I commend Newton for this apology. I don't think the Newton of old was mature enough to take on responsibilities in this way, but obviously going out of the league and into coaching has helped him grow as a person. Good for him.
