‘They Became Attached to Their Captors’: Teamsters Leader Criticizes Democrats for Overlooking ‘Working People’

Teamsters Union Critique of Democrats

Sean O’Brien, the President of the Teamsters Union, shared his thoughts candidly with Bali Weiss. He pointed out that Democrats have neglected the American workers, instead prioritizing special interest groups while focusing their campaigns on “social justice issues.”

In September 2024, the International Teamster Brotherhood decided not to back any presidential candidate after reviewing internal voting data. O’Brien expressed concerns about the Democrats, stating their disconnect with real working people, which was highlighted in a podcast discussion with Free Press.

“Democrats lost their way… they became enamored with prisoners, big money, and large tech. They forgot about the very people they’re supposed to represent,” O’Brien remarked. He also emphasized that after engaging in one-on-one conversations with people within the union, he realizes how disconnected the leadership is.

“For Democrats, this entire election has revolved around social justice,” he continued. “But our members are more concerned with having more money in their pockets, job security, and better pensions than social justice narratives.”

As the 2024 election unfolded, Trump saw support from white men without college degrees, as well as among Black men, Latinos, and Asian Americans. According to data from a democratic analytics firm, there appeared to be an oversaturation of left-leaning messaging from Kamala Harris and the Democrats. Issues surrounding transgender rights became a particularly effective campaign tool for Trump’s side, garnering increased support for him and other GOP candidates.
