Republican Sen. John Kennedy of Louisiana on Monday sparred with Fox News host Neil Cavuto over the Republican Party's portrayal of Vice President Kamala Harris after he claimed she was behind President Joe Biden's proposed Supreme Court reforms.
In an editorial The Washington Post Biden laid out sweeping proposals for the Supreme Court early Monday, including term limits for justices and “abolishing immunity for former presidents for crimes committed while in office.” Cavuto clashed with Republican Senator Kennedy after he suggested Harris was behind the proposals.
“I don't think President Biden's proposal is really President Biden's proposal. I think it's Vice President Kamala Harris' proposal,” Kennedy said. “Once the president announced it, she immediately and enthusiastically supported it. I think she asked the president to take the lead so that if there was a backlash, it wouldn't be her fault.”
Kennedy called it “very odd” that Harris has put her policy proposals “on abortion” at the forefront of her campaign. Harris has been focusing on the abortion issue since she was endorsed by Biden, who gave up his reelection bid on July 21. Biden, who is seen as a possible 2024 Democratic nominee, Release A pro-abortion “week of action” kicked off across battleground states on Monday, The Hill reported.
“A lot of Americans think the vice president is a bit of a goofball,” Kennedy told Cavuto. “They think she's not serious.”
“This motherfucker, senator, is rising in the polls. Is her tactic of focusing on her laughs and a former president calling her 'mean' and 'crazy' really the catalyst for showing she's unfit for office? Does it seem petty? Does judging her on this level seem like a strategy that will backfire on Republicans?” Cavuto countered.
Kennedy dismissed Cavuto's warning that he would “look stupid” for bashing Harris, telling the Fox News host that the vice president was “part of the crazy wing of the Democratic Party.” (RELATED: 'People will still be alive': Fox News host Shannon Bream debates Pete Buttigieg over immigrant crime)
“That lunatic faction is now dead, as is Donald Trump. [battleground] “It's going from state to state,” Cavuto said. “I'm not saying it could continue. I'm saying this madman is emboldened. If Republicans continue to treat her like a madman and a sycophant and that she's just another empty bureaucrat, I wonder how long it can last.”
“Neil, I'm sorry if that offends you, but I'm just telling you what the American people think,” the senator said.
“I'm just saying what the polls are showing right now! If you think that polls are short-lived and won't last and you're comfortable talking about this approach and her laugh and her 'mean' and her 'disrespect' and all the things Donald Trump has said, don't you think some of that is going to come back to bite you in the polls?” Cavuto pressed.
“I'm just stating what the American people think right now, based on the polls that I've seen,” Kennedy reiterated.
A Wall Street Journal general election poll released Saturday showed Trump leading Harris by two points. according to To RealClearPolling.
