Thomas Massie Becomes First Republican To Publicly Say He Won’t Throw Support Behind Mike Johnson For Speaker

Rep. Thomas Massie, Republican of Kentucky, told reporters Wednesday that he does not support House Speaker Mike Johnson to remain in office.

Massey: “I’ll vote for someone else.” said Politico Wednesday. “I have a few things on my mind. I’m not going to say anything yet.” (Related article: Elon Musk says lawmakers who vote in favor of big spending bills deserve to be “killed within two years”)

The Kentucky Republican has been a fierce critic of Johnson, slamming the speaker’s decision to partner with House Democrats on a major spending bill just before the Christmas break. commit In September, they requested that the “Christmas Omnibus” not be brought into the venue.

Massey had previously voted in favor of Georgia Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s motion to remove Johnson from the speakership in April, but House members voted 359-43. It was categorically rejected.

If the party retains a one-seat majority, Massey’s decision to oppose Johnson’s candidacy could throw the race to become leader of the next parliament into turmoil.

House Republicans could hold a 216-215 majority in the first months of President-elect Donald Trump’s second term. This is due to President Trump’s decision to nominate three members of the House of Representatives to serve in his administration, and the resignation of Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz, who failed to gain support in the Senate. He will serve as attorney general to the next president, who may hold the same position.

All Democrats are expected to vote for House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries in the speaker’s race.

No Republicans have announced plans to challenge Johnson for speaker.

MPs are scheduled to vote on Mr Johnson to become the next speaker on January 3.
