Famed writer and director Kevin Smith said one of his strongest memories of “Dogma” was that it was deeply negative.
Smith reflected on his career in a video. Entertainment WeeklyHe acknowledged that he faced a lot of backlash following the release of the 1999 cult classic, which starred Ben Affleck and Matt Damon and featured a cameo from Alanis Morissette, who played God in the film. He said the religion-themed film sparked anger and even death threats.

In a video that features his strongest memories from each of his films, director Smith spoke about “Dogma,” saying he received “a total of 400,000 hate letters and three real death threats” because of his role in the film.
Smith recalled some of the terrifying experiences he faced during that time.
“The Jews would be better off investing the money they steal from us in bulletproof vests, because we're going in with shotguns,” he was told.

Reflecting on the controversy, Smith mocked those who allegedly targeted him.
“There was a rubber poo monster in that movie,” he laughed.
“Can you imagine being that outraged over a movie with a rubber poop monster in it? I hope whoever wrote it finds the letter peaceful. Apparently they're running for Congress,” Smith said. Smith also responded to anti-Semitic backlash when it occurred. In a November 1999 Interview In an interview with the outlet, he addressed the issue head-on, saying: “It's a pretty big stretch to compare me to Hitler.”
