Three States Plan to Dispatch National Guard Troops to DC

National Guard Deployment in D.C. by Three States

Ohio, South Carolina, and West Virginia are sending National Guard units to Washington, D.C., as part of the Trump administration’s strategy to tackle crime and homelessness in the capital.

West Virginia plans to send between 300 and 400 personnel, while South Carolina is contributing 200, and Ohio has stated it will dispatch 150 troops.

“West Virginia is honored to stand with President Trump in restoring pride and beauty to our nation’s capital,” commented West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrissey.

In a tweet, he expressed, “At the request of the Trump administration, I am supporting the President’s initiative to make D.C. safe and beautiful. We are deploying 300-400 skilled personnel to reflect our commitment to a strong and safe America.”

He added, “Our National Guard is doing its part to support President Trump’s mission, and if a natural disaster strikes, they can return home immediately to respond.”

South Carolina’s Governor Henry McMaster also backed the initiative, stating, “I supported President Trump in deploying 200 South Carolina National Guard troops to restore law and order in our nation’s capital. The federal government will cover this expense under Title 32, and our troops will assist President Trump in his efforts.”

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine mentioned, “We were requested by the Secretary of the Army to send 150 military police officers from the Ohio State Guard to assist the D.C. National Guard. They will conduct patrols and serve as extra security, although they are not currently performing in law enforcement roles in Ohio.”

White House officials indicated that “The National Guard has not made any arrests so far. They may be armed as part of their mission and training to safeguard federal properties and allow law enforcement to operate safely.”
