Democrat Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz confirmed on CNN on Sunday that when his party came to power, they failed to pass laws that could “improve” voters’ lives.
Democrats have struggled to understand how the party lost to President Donald Trump in November, with some people pointing to poor messaging and progressive policies by party voters. In “Coalition State,” host Jake Tupper asked Waltz that the party’s problem with voters was that Americans simply question whether “they were selling, especially about immigrants.”
“No, with regard to immigration, what we were looking for is a bipartisan policy that strengthens immigration control, and we recognize that there is a need for a workforce here, and they should be legally permitted here, and when we get here, they are part of the American fabric,” says Walz. “That’s the bipartisan bill we had.”
“Donald Trump snatches college graduates, sends them back, or sends people back to El Salvador illegally, but that’s not a policy. But what we were definitely doing is to make sure they don’t get here, because we say we don’t care about violent criminals coming in,” Waltz added.
Under the Biden Harris administration, encounters at the border in the southern US reached record highs, with an estimated 8.5 million immigrant encounters recorded over four fiscal years. Both President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have tried to downplay the severity of the border crisis during their campaign, but voters have consistently ranked the issue among the biggest concerns when deciding who to vote for. Just as Trump follows his campaign vow to close southern borders and carry out a massive deportation of illegal immigrants, March Fox News polls found 63% of Americans support illegal immigrants.
Walz says his party’s issues allow GOPs to define policies on topics such as providing food for children, illegal immigration, and interracial income gaps.
“These are policies that strengthened America. I think what we allowed was that we were TI-ill and when we came to power, we didn’t go through anything that would improve people’s lives,” Walz said. “This whole idea, I think Democrats will be theoretical, you know, I’ll talk about food insecurities. People are hungry. They’re getting food. People don’t have a home.
“That’s the point I’m saying. Fox News would praise him, ‘Yeah, he’s for Day.’ It is not a definition of Dei.
Since his failed campaign with Harris, the waltz has reappeared in the media spotlight, launching a town hall tour across the red districts around the country in March. However, a recent CNN/SSRS poll shows that despite attempting to boost the party ahead of the midterm elections, Democrats have reached the highest ever support rating among voters.
“Now, I say to you first, Jake, I’m doing what I can here. I don’t know if I’m the best spokesman to do that after I lose the election. But what I know is the masses and this weekend they’re going to rise and ask them to do something about their leadership,” Waltz said.
In a poll released on March 16, CNN/SSRS found that Democrats’ favor dropped to just 29% among voters. This has decreased by 20 points since January 2021.
Polls found that 52% of the Democratic adults think the party’s current leader is taking it the wrong way, but over 30% of respondents were unable to name Democrats who felt it “most reflects the party’s core values.”
