Title 42 expansion causing migrant slowdown in Yuma

36% of immigrants arrested in December would now be deported if arrested in January

YUMA, Arizona (KECY, KYMA) – The Biden administration has struck a deal with Mexico to include Nicaraguans and Cubans in their Title 42 deportations to Mexico.

This month will lead to fewer local border crossings.

Immigration from these countries accounted for 36% of concerns in the Yuma sector last month.

CBP data shows that 11,083 Nicaraguans and Cubans were arrested in Yuma last month.

I spoke with one of them, Oberlin Garcia-Suarez from Cuba, on December 1st.

Who said they were fleeing political oppression?

“We have a dictatorship in our country. If we go against them, they put us in prison,” said Garcia Suárez.

But now, migrants like García Suárez are instantly sent back to Mexico by local agents if they are arrested at the border.

Because of the new asylum rules being implemented by the Biden administration.

“No, don’t just show up at the border. Stay where you are and legally apply from there,” President Joe Biden said on Jan. 5 when he announced the expansion. .

The legal pathway follows the expansion of Title 42.

Immigrants from the newly added countries can seek asylum using an app called CBP One.

Alternatively, you can get sponsorship from a private American citizen.

“It’s good that they’re expanding customs clearance so that asylum seekers don’t have to travel through cartels and smugglers without permission,” said Danilo Zak, a senior immigration official.

But he adds that the move may not be a permanent solution. Because Title 42 still faces legal issues and immigrants find it difficult to use the app.

Ultimately, he says, it is Congress that needs to come together to fix the broken border.

“Congress needs to build port of entry processing, improve infrastructure, and have more resources to work on claims. .

The Biden administration plans to assert its right to terminate Title 42 in federal court on March 1.
