In footage aired by CNN on Saturday, a group of black men at a barbershop in Pennsylvania said they didn't consider Vice President Kamala Harris to be black.

Former President Donald Trump, speaking at a National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) event in Chicago on Wednesday, suggested that Harris only recently began to identify as black, not Indian. Several black men at a barbershop in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, Said Joel Smith, a reporter for the local CBS affiliate, said he doesn't think Harris is black. “Does Kamala make you more or less likely to vote Democrat?” Smith asked the men.

The man who asked if Harris was black then asked the other men sitting in the barbershop the same question.

“I agree,” replied another.

“I heard she's not,” said the man who answered the next question. “I heard she's half black and half Asian.”

CNN's Michael Smerconish, who aired the footage on his Saturday morning television show, said that after he played the audio on his SiriusXM radio show Thursday, he received several calls from people “who identify as African-American” who told him “these men are the exception, not the norm.”

“Some have described black voters as no different than white voters, as less informed voters. Trump is outreach[ing]black voters more than any other Republican presidential candidate,” he said.
