SAN LUIS, Arizona (KYMA, KECY) – Arizona’s Superintendent of Public Education visited Yuma for the first time since taking office in January.
After discussing education with local educators, teachers and parents yesterday, today he decided to visit a local high school to assess its excellence.
“We decided to drive up to San Luis to appreciate true excellence. At the Department of Education, we noticed they went from a D school to a B school in a year,” says Arizona Public Education. Superintendent Tom Horne said.
San Luis High School was the only school Tom Horn visited in Yuma County.
Horn said he was very impressed with the school.
“This school is off the charts when it comes to the percentage of students who make it to college, adjusting for demographics,” Horn said.
San Luis High School’s college-going rate is over 61% of its graduates, compared to the state average of about 46%.
The San Luis principal introduced the superintendent to several different career and technical education classes for hands-on learning.
“Our kids love career education and technical education classes. They also love what we saw today: engineering classes, law, public safety,” said San Luis Principal Robert Jankowski. said.
“I saw an impressive engineering instructor who was very dedicated. You can choose what works for you,” Horn said.
Of all the schools in Yuma County, the principal said he was glad Horn chose to visit San Luis.
“I am truly honored that he came to San Luis High School. He may have attended several other schools before coming here,” Jankowski said.
