Footage of the tornado was shared on social media, showing debris flying into the air
A rare tornado hit parts of Los Angeles, damaging buildings and injuring at least one person.
The phenomenon occurred Wednesday morning in Montebello, about eight miles east of downtown Los Angeles, according to an ABC News affiliate. KABC.
At least five buildings had roof damage, with some torn or collapsed, according to the outlet.
“It felt like someone was hitting the wall with an iron bar,” one person in the area told an NBC affiliate. KNBCMore“We saw trash flying around, trees falling, even the wrought iron gates were torn apart. I’m glad no one was hurt.”
Local business owner Niky Orellana said the storm also damaged some of his buildings.

Orellana, owner of Niky’s Sports Warehouse, told KNBC: “I blew the door. I blew the window.”
The news station said 11 of its 17 buildings were deemed unsafe to enter by the Montebello Fire Department.

National Weather Service Confirmed Tornado Wednesday afternoon, in a statement posted on Twitter. The agency said there is no EF rating yet.
“We are still assessing the damage,” NWS said.

NWS previously reported that California averages about 11 tornadoes per yearmost common in the northern half of the central valley.
Still, Wednesday afternoon’s events upset many residents.
“This is what you see in Ohio, Arkansas,” said one CNN“Not Montebello”
