TRAINING: MOCK SEARCH AND RESCUE FOR DPS TRAINING EVALUATION | The Buzz -The buzz in Bullhead City – Lake Havasu City – Kingman – Arizona – California

Last Tuesday (1/31) morning, Mohave County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue coordinated a mock search and rescue with the Department of Public Security’s Western Air Rescue Helicopter team for a rescue specialist/flight medic training evaluation. A search team in the training area called in the assistance of Western Air’s rescue helicopter to locate an injured hunter in the Hualapai Mountains near Devils’ Dip. A crew of three launched from her KRMC’s hangar and began a search on the northwestern side of the Hualapai Mountains, while search crews were conducting route and location searches on the ground. A helicopter positioned the wounded hunter in a rocky area inaccessible to vehicles. Needing to be reconfigured for rappelling and short range, the search and rescue team secured a landing zone and the helicopter landed. Search and rescue services assisted in reconstructing the aircraft. The helicopter then returned and a rescue-her specialist in training rappelled another medic out of the helicopter onto the wounded hunter, conducting an assessment and preparing for a short-range operation. A rappelling medic is secured with 150 feet of rope. With a wounded hunter immobilized in a screamer suit (used for quick rescues without the use of a full body harness). They were then flown to a landing zone and transferred for further medical evaluation. It’s great to have another rescue specialist/flight medic in our state’s DPS air rescue force and we look forward to future field operations! Great job by all involved.
