The trial of a school resource officer who stood outside during the 2018 Parkland High School shooting began Wednesday, according to the Associated Press.
Former Broward County Delegate Scott Peterson has been charged with seven felony counts of child abandonment, three counts of misdemeanor and perjury to remarks after the shooting, The Associated Press reported. report. The trial could last up to two months, according to to NBC6.

Peterson retired after the shooting and was retroactively dismissed, the Associated Press reported. report. He was released on bail after being arrested in June 2019. according to To CBS News.
Prosecutors allege Peterson, who was armed at the time of the shooting, was at the scene and had multiple opportunities to intervene, according to the Associated Press.
“We have to get on the scene and find the shooter,” said prosecutor Stephen Klinger, according to the Associated Press.
Peterson’s attorney, Mark Eigrash, said he had no idea where the gunshots came from or where the shooter was.
“He wasn’t a coward. [Peterson] “I did the best I could with the limited information I had,” Aigrash said, according to the Associated Press.
