This article contains spoilers for the first episode of “True Detective: Night Country.”
The first episode of “True Detective: Night Country” aired on HBO Max on Sunday, and the iconic show has definitely received a major makeover since we last watched it.
With two strong female leads and perhaps one of the creepiest plotlines in the show's history, “True Detective” season 4 is probably not for everyone. But it's definitely worth seeing. The first episode introduces us to Alaska on the first day of the night. And in the opening scene, we already know that something is deeply, perhaps supernaturally, wrong in the hellish landscape above the Arctic Circle.
The show's female leads, played by Jodie Foster and Kali Reis, are both the types of women most men would hate. They're manly, brash, angry policewomen who don't suffer fools willingly. Is it because I hate Foster's character, Liz Danvers, because I should, or because I can already see the character's story unfolding before my eyes and guess where the story will go from here? I don't know if it's because I absolutely hate it. Temporal. In any case, I still need to know what will happen to her.
Reis plays Evangeline Navarro, and her story is probably the most interesting yet (though her sex scenes were quite disturbing). My guess is that writer/director Issa Lopez leans into a combination of the stereotypical alien/monster horror tropes of Winter's Bone and Wind River. Masu. These are both tried-and-true forms of entertainment, and I think they'll work, even if the script is melodramatic in parts. There is still room for improvement.
Lopez is already dealing with backlash about her work.Apparently, a group of “toxic” trolls online are trying to plummet the Rotten Tomatoes score for the first episode, Variety I got it.. This may be important to Hollywood types who use these rankings as social capital, but it doesn't mean much to the rest of the world. If you like shows with a supernatural, violent, murder-mystery vibe, like “From'' or “Heaven,'' you'll enjoy “True Detective: Night Country.''
But will season 4 be as good as the previous season? No, not so far. However, it is somewhat difficult to compare this new atmosphere to previous seasons. As a solo show, I'm here. And what is the mystery that brought us here? Despite the metaphor, it doesn't get much better than this.
