‘Trying To Destroy My Life’: Man Accuses Deputy Of Prompting K-9 To Make False Drug Alert

A Houston, Texas resident has filed a lawsuit against a lawmaker for allegedly misdirecting his dog to “warn” of the presence of drugs, according to NPR.

Alec Shot charged Bexar County Sheriff’s Deputy Joel Babb with making a stop on Interstate 35 based on false claims. Later, K-9 Lieutenant Martin A. Molina III allegedly accidentally “alarmed” his dog to the smell of drugs after refusing to let him see the inside of his pickup truck. according to to NPR. Schodt requested a body camera video showing the handler’s point of view, according to the paper.

“Obviously he’s telling the dogs to warn them,” Schott says. “I thought, ‘These guys are trying to ruin my life.'”

Schott’s attorney, Christy Hebert, believes lawmakers may have violated Schott’s rights and influenced them to do so with the dog. “Dogs are thought to be unplanned,” explained Hébert. “But in reality, they are influenced by their handlers and want to please their masters.”

Researchers questioned the extent to which dogs in kindergarten through ninth grade were influenced by their handlers to track odors that might not even exist, the paper said.

Former K-9 officer and trainer Andy Falco expressed hope that showing the footage would encourage K-9 trainers to be more rigorous and fair in dog training. “I think it’s good for K-12 units to have something like this out there,” Falco said. “That way they’ll train harder, and maybe the kids who weren’t double-blind sniffers will start double-blind sniffing.” .”
