A group of students from Tuba City High School had the opportunity to attend the National Association of Federally Impacted Schools Conference March 12-14 in Washington, DC.
The conference allowed students to participate in discussions on educational policy and advocacy and learn about the impact of federal land on local schools. Students were selected based on their academic performance and leadership skills and were accompanied by school administrators.
Students, along with their Salamanca School peers, participated in the student panel, Accelerating Student Engagement in the Indian Land School District. A panel discussion focused on ways to increase student engagement and success in schools on Native American lands.
Ron Begay, a member of the Tuba City Unified School District Steering Committee, applauded the students’ participation in the Facebook comments.
“Great presentation by our students,” he said. “Great job for our young people and great representation for all.”
NAFIS conferences bring together educators, administrators, and policy makers from schools affected by federal lands such as military bases, Indian reservations, and national parks to discuss issues and share best practices.
