Tuberville on the Gaza peace proposal: ‘This is the pivotal moment for Hamas’

US Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) has expressed skepticism about President Donald Trump’s latest efforts to resolve the conflict in Gaza, citing concerns about Hamas’s reliability.

On Tuesday, Trump, alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, unveiled a potential 20-point peace proposal.

This plan includes an immediate ceasefire, exchanging all hostages in Gaza, a gradual withdrawal of Israeli troops, disarming Hamas, and establishing a transitional government with help from international organizations.

“It’s not a now-or-never situation for Hamas,” Tuberville remarked during a Fox Business interview Wednesday. “He gives them all the ropes they can get. One concern is the tight time frame for retrieving hostages. What’s the timeline? Is it 72 hours? That’s significant when negotiating this deal.”

Hamas hinted on Thursday that it might reject the proposal, stating it primarily “advances Israel’s interests” while neglecting the needs of the Palestinian people.

“There are many factors at play,” Tuberville added, noting that much of Hamas’s leadership has been significantly diminished. “I really don’t know how capable they are. I’m unclear on who would ultimately make these decisions.”

The senator expressed doubt about any Palestinian leaders being trustworthy, saying, “But ultimately, I lack confidence that they have leaders smart enough to negotiate effectively for the Palestinian people.”
