Tucson back-to-school event provides free backpacks, other goodies

The monsoon season may have just begun, but it’s not too early to start thinking about the new school year.

Banner/Aetna is working with the Pima County Sheriff’s Department to provide 2,700 free backpacks and school supplies to children in need of the 9th Annual Badges & Backpacks.

From left to right, Randy Peterson, Rocío Suazo, and Peggy Solis of Imago Day Middle School will receive 2,700 school supplies, coupons for free children’s meals, haircuts and other items on Friday, June 9. I volunteered to pack my backpack.

The benefits include dental, hearing and vision tests, courtesy of El Rio and Banner University Family Care, plus a complimentary health check. In addition, the Pima County Health Department will provide free COVID-19 and flu vaccines.

“This is a one-stop-shop to help kids get ready for school. You don’t have to worry about it anymore,” event coordinator Detective Brittany Abar said.

Backpacks are available on a first-come, first-served basis. The child must be present (or the parent must have the child’s birth certificate) and have been enrolled from kindergarten through her 12th grade to receive the backpack.

The event also offers indoor fun in the middle of summer.

Attendees will enjoy complimentary haircuts, complimentary meal coupons, and visits with University of Arizona mascots Wilbur and Wilma, Disney Princesses, Arizona Ghostbusters, and Star Wars characters.

The Pima Animal Rescue Center offers on-site animal adoptions and activities such as tours of bounce houses, fire trucks and emergency vehicles.

Abar said the event provides an opportunity for active networking among first responders and the community.

“There will be something for everyone. People will see us in a positive environment instead of seeing us only on the worst days,” Abar said.
