Tucson BP agents involved in fatal shooting of man, while responding to shots fired

At approximately 9:04 p.m. May 18, the U.S. Border Patrol Tucson Area Tactical Operations Center informed Aho Border Patrol that the Tohono O’Dum Nation Police Department was requesting assistance to Border Patrol agents to respond to a call of gunfire in the west. Officials reported over a commercial radio that they had arrived at the recreation center with the police station at approximately 9:27 pm. At around 9:32 p.m., the police officer requested an officer to follow him to the scene, and the officer chased him in an official car for about 2 minutes and 17 seconds.

Around 9:35 p.m., police and investigators arrived and parked the car near the man’s residence. Responding investigators and police officers dispersed to search for the man.

A special officer of Customs and Border Protection’s Department of Specialized Responsibilities reviewed video footage of the incident. Officers and staff encountered a person outside the residence at approximately 9:39 pm, approximately 103 meters northwest of the parked vehicle. The person threw the object at the officer as he approached the building, and it fell several feet from the officer’s feet. Shortly after the person throws the object, he abruptly pulls his right arm away from his body and three personnel fire several times with commercial weapons, hitting the person. The man fell to the ground as police officers and investigators slowly approached the man.

Officers broadcast over the service radio that a gunshot had been fired around 9:40 p.m., and officers continued to approach and secure the person. Officers checked his pulse, began a medical evaluation of the man’s condition, and called for emergency medical services at approximately 9:41 p.m.

At around 9:45 p.m., staff began CPR after failing to detect the patient’s pulse. At approximately 9:46 pm, agents requested air support for the man. At approximately 9:48 PM, agents were informed that air rescue was not possible due to bad weather. The agent continued CPR until a Border Patrol emergency medical technician on the scene contacted the man by phone. Physician at St. Mary’s Hospital in Tucson, Arizona. At approximately 9:52 PM, agents informed the individual over the service radio that he had no pulse, and agents continued CPR.

Doctors at St. Mary’s Hospital pronounced the man dead at 10:06 p.m. and took over custody of his body pending an autopsy by the Pima County Coroner’s Office.

The deceased was found to be an adult male from the United States. The Pima County Coroner’s Office will conduct an autopsy on May 19, and more information about the cause of death and cause of death will be released by the office when the investigation is completed.

The agents involved in the incident are on vacation, in accordance with current standard practice in post-lethal force investigations. During the incident, all three agents firing weapons and seven additional agents activated body-worn cameras.
