Tucson lunch spot Barrio Charro is closing

Barrio Charro, a fast-casual restaurant in collaboration with El Charro and Barrio Bread, will close on Sunday, July 30th to make way for a more expansive new concept.

Ray Flores, Jr., president of El Charro’s parent company, Si Charro, said the new restaurant will build on Si Charro’s strengths in Sonora-style Mexican cuisine and bring together popular menu items from other restaurants under one roof. .

The new restaurant is scheduled to open in early September at the Barrio Charro space at 3699 N. Campbell Ave. Flores said details and names will be announced next month.

“With the proliferation of restaurants on Campbell Avenue, we realized we needed a wider menu,” Flores said. “We will continue to offer popular products such as torta.”

Barrio Charro, opening in January 2021, is a fast-casual, take-out breakfast and lunch restaurant serving sandwiches and tortas centered around Tucson’s award-winning Barrio Bread bread. But it’s the few burritos and tostadas on the menu that make up the bulk of the restaurant’s sales, Flores said.

Barrio Charro’s menu focuses on sandwiches made with barrio bread. The new concept incorporates menu items inspired by the 100-year-old El Charo Café’s tacos and enchiladas sister locations.

Flores said the name “charro” is often associated with burritos, enchiladas and tacos at El Charro Café, the Flores family’s centenary flagship store, rather than bread or sandwiches.

Barrio Bled won’t get involved with the new concept, but Flores said it will stick to the fast-casual model.

The new menu includes Si Charo Restaurants with Plant Plus Gluten-Free Churros Charovida northwest side.street cones from Charlo Steak & Del Rey downtown; and from Carneseca El Charo.

There are also a few carryovers from Barrio Charro, including the popular carne asada and chicken bowl.

Si Charro also owns The Monica Downtown, which celebrated its first anniversary in March.

Flores said the plan is to also include street taco enchiladas and a salsa bar inspired by the El Charo-style beef patty tacos that have been on the menu since 1922.

“We know that’s what people want,” he says.

Barrio Charo Open daily from 8am to 3pm
