Tucson Police identify suspect in connection to the murder of teen shot in 2019

TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – Tucson Police Homicide Detectives have identified a suspect in connection with a murder. Murder of 15-year-old Eric Isaac Nanezwas shot and killed on Tucson's south side in September 2019.

On September 18, 2019, Nunez was found suffering from gunshot wounds and died at the scene near the Campbell-Drexel neighborhood.

Detectives asked the public for information and conducted several interviews and search warrants in hopes of uncovering what led to the shooting.

At the beginning of the case, detectives investigated several tips pointing to the names of potential suspects. But police said there was no evidence to support their involvement.

Through follow-up investigation and forensic evidence, detectives learned that Eric Nunez was in the area the night of the shooting to meet someone for a negotiated transaction.

The investigation continued in the months that followed, but no suspects have yet been identified.

On February 21, 2021, TPD responded to a shooting incident. in the parking lot of the apartment complex at 5950 S. Park Avenue.

During the investigation, TPD Homicide Detectives learned that 19-year-old Edsel Cecena-Marquez and several other individuals were involved in a physical confrontation in the parking lot.

Moments after the collision, Cecena-Marquez and another person exchanged gunfire.

Authorities said Cecena-Marquez was shot during the interaction and died at the scene.

Investigators were able to speak with witnesses, including the reported shooter.

Once detectives completed their investigation, the findings were submitted to the Pima County Attorney's Office for review.

Tucson police said after investigating the circumstances, no charges were filed in Cecena-Marquez's death.

During the investigation, detectives recovered some evidence, including trace amounts of DNA.

Detectives identified Cecena-Marquez as the suspect in the murder of Eric Nañez. Náñez's family has been notified of the findings and the investigation is considered closed.
