B.arro’s Pizza, two local, family-owned pizzerias in Tucson, has awarded 19-year-old Carlos Borunda $10,000 as the winner of the 2022 Arizona Barro’s Pizza Dr Pepper Tuition Giveaway.
The prize money was used by one local Arizona resident to pay for college tuition and related educational expenses.
Borunda works as a Marketing Assistant at Simply Bookkeeping & Taxes. After she took time off from school and found another job, she learned that Barro’s Pizza was offering cash prizes to local students and decided to enter a competition.
Winning $10,000 allowed him to return to school at Pima Community College, where he studied marketing and computer information systems.
“I can’t believe I won,” said Borna.
“I am looking forward to going back to school and I hope that I will be able to get the resources and education I need to deepen my knowledge of web development. I decided I wanted to open a digital marketing agency in Tucson.”
With 47 restaurants throughout Arizona and more than 40 years in business, the Barro family takes pride in finding ways to support and improve the communities they serve.

The Barro’s Dr Pepper Tuition Giveaway has awarded $95,000 to Arizona students since 2012. Submissions were open to all Arizona residents over the age of 18, and winners were randomly selected from her over 13,000 entries. Winners can use the money to pay for current expenses such as tuition and books, or to pay off outstanding student loans.
