Tucson, Arizona (KGUN) — green stormwater infrastructure The project will expand after the City of Tucson has approved funding for three more projects.
A little over three years ago, the city started a program to channel rainwater into watersheds to grow trees and vegetation.
This project will help shade the sidewalks while also beautifying the area.
“This is a great water saver, because Tucson uses 30% of our water for outdoor landscaping…it’s a great way to save water and provide a comfortable facility for our neighborhood,” said the Third District Council. Rep. Kevin Dahl said.
District 3 will be home to one of three new projects, the first of its kind in the region.
It will be built at the intersection of 11th Avenue and Flores Street. Dahl said the crossing was closed due to its high crime rate, which has brought some improvement.
“We have reduced traffic to a certain extent by keeping traffic out of places where people live. We want to offer it,” said Dahl.
The program is funded by charging water bills to Tucson Water customers. Customers are billed based on water usage, which averages about $1 per month.
“It reminded me that Tucson is on the cutting edge of water conservation,” Dahl said.
