Tuscaloosa's Metro Animal Shelter announced over the weekend that it will be closed for the next two weeks due to an outbreak of canine distemper in the city.
“We are seeking emergency foster homes for asymptomatic dogs and puppies. Dogs and puppies with mild symptoms are being isolated for further treatment of symptoms while awaiting testing assistance,” they wrote on Facebook.
“To mitigate the impact and limit further spread of the virus, we must suspend animal adoptions and rescue transfers for a minimum of two weeks, which will allow us the opportunity to implement thorough cleaning procedures and emergency disease control procedures,” they wrote.
The shelter has asked Tuscaloosa Animal Control to limit the number of stray dogs they bring in unless necessary, because each new dog increases the risk of infection.
“Starting immediately, we want to let you know that adoptions will be temporarily suspended during this time. This precaution is necessary to prevent further spread of the virus and allow our team to focus on caring for and treating affected animals. We will keep you updated on how we will proceed with cat adoptions as we proceed with deep cleaning operations,” they wrote.
Adoptions will also be suspended during the two-week period.
If you live in Tuscaloosa and are looking to foster, donate, volunteer or find a lost pet, please call the shelter’s main line at 205-752-9101 or email us. [email protected].
