Two NYPD Cops Wounded After Suspect Allegedly Grabbed Officer’s Gun And Opened Fire, Cops Say

Two NYPD officers were shot and injured in a confrontation with a suspect on Tuesday, a video on Twitter revealed, as announced during an NYPD News press conference.

Officers were attempting to arrest the alleged perpetrator, 39-year-old Melvin Butler, when the situation escalated. according to Press conference. “We have a very violent and dangerous individual with a long history of violence,” Democratic New York Mayor Eric Adams said in a video.

“Today, two police officers from the 73rd Precinct were shot and killed while carrying out a mission requested by a New Yorker,” Police Commissioner Edward A. Caban said at a press conference. Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenney further detailed in the video the events that allegedly occurred at the apartment building around 3:31 p.m. The incident began when three police officers and a sergeant responded to a distress call from Butler's mother, who had allegedly been assaulted by her son, Kenney said. She allegedly suffered injuries to her head, according to the detective chief. At a news conference, Kenney said body camera footage from the encounter was being reviewed. Butler resisted arrest, Kenney said. The detective chief claimed he grabbed a gun from one of the officers and fired a shot. The first officer was shot in his left hand, and the second officer was shot in his left thigh, Kenney said. In the ensuing chaos, police at the scene shot Butler in the stomach and leg, Kenney said. The suspect is in serious but stable condition, the detective added.

“He has been arrested six times in the past in New York City and once in North Carolina. He has a history of resisting arrest and a history of domestic violence,” Kenney said at a press conference regarding the alleged crimes. More details about the history.
