The Alabama Crimson Tide is set to start a new quarterback for the first time in two years as they gear up for the upcoming football season.
Ty Simpson, who has been waiting for this moment, is ready to step up under Kalen Deboer’s important second-year campaign in Tuscaloosa. He has been a part of the transition from Nick Saban’s coaching to Deboer’s, and even after playing for Saban for two years, he remains connected to his former coach.
In a recent media session ahead of his first career start, Simpson shared that he sought Saban’s advice on managing nerves in such high-pressure situations. As always, Saban offered a reflective piece of wisdom:
“I asked him… Should I tell myself I’m going to a game like this? How to avoid being so nervous, how to avoid being so nervous, not getting bigger than what it is?” – Ty Simpson on a recent conversation with former Alabama head coach Nick Saban. pic.twitter.com/ycyyrdzfic

Simpson recounted Saban’s advice: “He told me to play inside myself. To make sure you keep your team out of negative plays or drives. He’s always said you’re in good condition and not dead underwater when you finish a drive with a punt, putt, or field goal attempt.”
It’s clear that Simpson understands his role well, and having Saban validate his approach right before such a critical game certainly brings an extra layer of confidence.
