U.S. military to create National Defense Zone near the border close to Yuma

U.S. Military Establishes National Defense Area Near Yuma, Arizona

The U.S. military is setting up a National Defense Area (NDA) along the southern border near Yuma, Arizona.

This area will cover about 100 miles and will be integrated into the Marine Corps Air Base (MCAS) Yuma.

As a result, troops stationed here will have the ability to oversee activities and manage checkpoints effectively.

“We are very appreciative of the President’s extra support for our service members,” remarked Jonathan Line, a supervisor from Yuma County District 2.

Nonetheless, ongoing concerns regarding access, signage, and civil rights linger among local officials.

Some environmental advocates believe this initiative could harm the ecosystem.

Line mentioned that the amount of debris left behind poses a significant issue.

“We wonder if they have actually visited the border to witness the chaos and destruction left in its wake… it’s become quite an environmental wasteland,” Rhine pointed out.

Local opinions are divided; while some are in favor of enhanced security, others express discomfort with the approach.

“I fully support increased measures to secure our borders, prevent threats, and curb issues like fentanyl and human trafficking,” Rhine added.

On the other hand, Tony Reyes from Yuma County’s Supervisory District 4 highlighted concerns. He noted, “It’s concerning that we’re putting the National Guard at risk without fully understanding the situation.”

Reyes believes the area isn’t as high-risk as portrayed and thinks military resources could be directed elsewhere.

He also pointed out that the current administration has canceled asylum applications, with only about 10-15 apprehensions occurring daily in the Yuma sector. He feels too many domestic challenges are being framed as immigration issues.

While similar NDAs exist in New Mexico and Texas, this marks the first one in Arizona.

I’m still waiting for a response from MCAS Yuma and will provide updates as I receive more information.
