UAB Hospital Tops Rankings Again

For the twelfth straight year, UAB Hospital has been identified as the best hospital in Alabama and within the Birmingham metropolitan area, according to the 2025-26 US News & World Report Best Hospitals rankings released on Tuesday.

Dawn Bulgarella, CEO of UAB Health System, stated, “Being recognized as the top hospital in the state and metro area is a testament to the dedication and expertise of our doctors, nurses, and staff. These rankings reflect an unwavering commitment to providing exceptional care and promoting innovative treatments across a wide range of specialties.”

This year, UAB Medicine has secured nationwide rankings in five adult specialties.

Alongside this national recognition, the hospital also achieved high performance ratings in seven additional specialties and was acknowledged for high performance in 19 adult procedures and conditions.

Additionally, UAB St. Vincent’s Birmingham ranked fourth in Alabama and second in the Birmingham metropolitan area.

The UAB Health System encompasses 11 hospitals, owned or associated, with a total of over 2,600 licensed beds. Notably, UAB Hospital ranks as the eighth largest in the U.S. and stands as the only Level I trauma center in Alabama recognized by the US Academy of Surgeons.

Other facilities within the system include Callahan Eye Hospital, which is the state’s sole specialty eye hospital, and Viva Health, providing coverage to over 78,500 residents of Alabama. The system also reports over $30 million annually in unfilled Medicaid care.

Moreover, the University of Alabama at Birmingham is the largest employer in the state, with more than 28,000 employees. It also serves as a leading research institution, securing over $780 million in annual research funding, contributing to an economic impact of $12.1 billion. The university offers over 180 programs and has maintained an enrollment of over 21,000 students for six consecutive years.
