UAB supporter’s extra generosity brings his total gift to school to $100 million


The University of Alabama at Birmingham announced that one of its most generous donors has once again donated millions of dollars to the school.

Dothan's Dr. Marnix E. Hersink has already donated $95 million to the university.

Hersink is the namesake of UAB's Marnix E. Hersink School of Medicine, the Marnix E. Hersink Institute for Biomedical Innovation, and the Mary Hersink Institute for Global Health. This December, Heersink donated an additional $5 million, bringing his total naming gift to $100 million.

Mr. Helsink's gift is the largest philanthropic effort in UAB history.

“The new gift targets a range of programs for immediate investment, including strategic recruitment efforts, strengthens our research strategic initiative, Growth with Purpose, and supports our research enterprise. Help us reach $1 billion in research funding. ”

Dr. Anupam Agarwal, senior vice president for medical affairs and dean of the Hellsink School of Medicine, said the university is grateful for the support.

“His first naming gift has already opened many new avenues of growth for us. With this new gift commitment, we will continue to grow in our mission areas of medical education, clinical care, and biomedical research. Our pursuit of excellence across the board will enable us to achieve our ultimate goal of improving the health and well-being of all who come to us for care.”

Hersink's naming gift will support the creation of up to 20 new endowed positions to ultimately expand elite faculty recruitment. In the first year of her gift alone, the Hellsink School of Medicine established and awarded her five Hellsink Endowed Chairs and her one Hellsink Endowed Professorship.
