Umpire Taken Off Field After Being Hit By Giancarlo Stanton’s Broken Bat

A baseball game at Yankee Stadium took a horrifying turn on Sunday when home plate umpire Nick Murray was struck in the neck by a shard of a broken bat.

The incident occurred during the fifth inning of a game between the New York Yankees and Colorado Rockies, when Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton's bat shattered at the handle after hitting a pitch from Rockies pitcher Austin Gomber, The New York Times reported. New York Post.

Video footage showed shrapnel flying through the air and hitting Marley, enough to rip off the umpire's mask, before Marley fell to the ground and remained there until he was carried off the field on a stretcher with a neck cast in place. Realizing what had happened, Stanton walked from first base to the umpire to check on Marley as he was placed on a stretcher, and the crowd cheered as medical staff carried Marley off the field through the center field exit.

The Yankees later announced in the bottom of the seventh inning that Marley was undergoing a series of tests by the team's medical staff, with crew chief Marvin Hudson taking over catching duties.

Earlier in the season, two of the Yankees' highest-paid players were sidelined with medical issues. Outfielder Aaron Judge missed several days of games due to “mid-spring fatigue.”

Pitcher Gerrit Cole underwent an MRI on his right elbow in March after struggling to recover between starts, and Cole indicated he felt just as tired after a limited spring outing as he did after throwing 100 pitches in the regular season.
