Union workers in the automotive and steel industry said Wednesday that President Donald Trump’s tariffs on foreign imports were “very positive” for their industry.
Trump has announced that the US will impose mutual tariffs, including a 25% tax on imported cars, on countries where auto workers from Michigan, James Benson Jr. and Indiana Steelworker Matt Novak, who expressed optimism about Talf’s industry, have placed taxes on American goods, including a 25% tax on imported cars.
“[I’m] Novak told Fox’s business host Elizabeth McDonald in “Editing the Evening.” “And many of our brother and sister steel workers are very excited about it because we saw what it did in 2018. It definitely made a difference to the market. It saved a lot of work. It did a lot for us. As Americans, as a country, it did a lot, but for the steel industry it definitely helped us.”
Benson said he and others in his industry struggled to find work under Democrat leadership, due to the number of car factories that were closed. He believed that Trump had returned the car work to the United States by enacting stricter policies on foreign countries. “I have 26 year old plants with eight plants, as many of these plants were closed and many of them were closed under democratic guidance. [the North American Trade Agreement] Originally built by the Bush family, I turned around. [former President Bill] Clinton signed it to the law, and that was the biggest blood bath we’ve ever had by losing our jobs and we didn’t recover from it. ” Benson said.
Trump said tariffs on all vehicles and auto parts imported into the US on Wednesday were intended to protect the automotive industry and were “harmed by excessive imports.”
Auto workers scoffed at Democrats’ criticism of tariffs and said employment would return to the US in “even larger numbers” than Trump’s first term. Novak argued that tariffs could increase job creation in the US as fewer products are imported into the US from overseas.
During the president’s announcement, Trump leader Brian Pannebecker’s auto workers said union workers in the auto industry, including members of the union’s auto worker, are supporting the president’s tariffs. Novak agreed, claiming that tariffs would halt the massive influx of auto parts imported from foreign countries and allow for more American production.
“It’s going to increase everything along with the steel industry, the aluminum industry, along with everyone who applies everything to all vehicles owned by all Americans. “It’s going to create more work, it’s going to be a lot better. Tax revenue, everything will be very good for all of us, and I think it’s a very positive thing.”
