University of Alabama officially opens state-of-the-art Randall Welcome Center

At a ribbon-cutting ceremony in Tuscaloosa, President Stuart R. Bell officially proclaimed the new Catherine and Pettus Randall Welcome Center at Arabuma University open.

This center specializes in undergraduate admissions and provides a place for prospective students to take campus tours.

“The Randall Welcome Center showcases the University of Alabama's rich history, unwavering commitment to student success, and unparalleled student experience at Capstone,” Bell said. “Our mission to bring the brightest students to campus has been further strengthened.”

Katherine Randall, who attended the ceremony, said the new welcome center named after her late husband meant the world to the Randall family.

“It means a lot to this family to have the Pettus name and legacy preserved in this way,” Randall said. “When he passed away at the age of 57, he had so much left to do on this earth and so many plans to do so. It is his accomplishments that inspire others to grow into men of generosity and vision like him.”

“Pettus is a history major at UA, so he is thrilled that the university has preserved the historic Blythe building not only for his campus, but also for his beloved hometown of Tuscaloosa.” continued Randall. “Years ago, the university welcomed Pettus and I as students into a wonderful community that has blessed us with countless blessings and provided direction for our lives.”

“We are really excited to support the university’s efforts to improve the welcoming experience for new students.”

School officials say the new facility will serve as a benchmark against which all other admissions offices nationwide will be compared.

“The Randall Welcome Center will have a significant impact on our recruiting and admissions efforts,” said Dr. Matthew McClendon, UA vice provost and executive director of admissions. “Having the best welcome center in the country allows prospective students and their families to enjoy an unparalleled campus visit experience.”

The 15,000-square-foot Randall Welcome Center includes a gathering area for tours, a lounge, a theater, and UA's admissions office. It is part of an approximately 118,000 square foot renovation and addition to Bryce Main, which also includes the Smith Family Performing Arts Center.
