The University of Southern Alabama has announced that this year’s freshman class is the largest in its history. This marks the third consecutive year of enrollment growth for the institution.
Total enrollment has reached 14,285 students, up from 14,003 the previous year. Much of this increase can be attributed to the rise in undergraduate numbers, with 2,137 new first-year students. University officials also pointed out that retention rates are at a record high, indicating more students are choosing to return for their third and fourth years.
President Joe Bonner expressed his gratitude to faculty and staff for their hard work in achieving this growth. He mentioned that the university is viewed positively by high school students throughout the state and along the Gulf Coast. “They see the unique opportunities and vibrant communities we offer and are excited to be part of a university experiencing such incredible momentum,” Bonner noted.
New student registration has grown by over 30% in the last three years. An increase in recruitment efforts last year, which included 750 visits to high schools and community events as well as 51 special open days, contributed to this success.
The university not only focused on the size of the incoming freshman class but also emphasized academic excellence, reporting an impressive average GPA of 3.75 for these new students.
Executive Vice President and Dr. Provost Andy Kent commented that the growth reflects both quantity and quality. “We are excited about the enrollment increase and the academic achievements of our new students,” Kent said. “There’s something really special happening here in the South, and I’m proud to see more students choosing to be a part of it.”
College officials noted that this record freshman class, along with the three-year growth streak, positions South Alabama as one of the fastest-growing institutions in the state. New recruitment strategies and expanding academic opportunities continue to build momentum.
