In 2023, Texas banned DEI in higher education, choosing instead to focus on “merit-based approaches in which individuals are judged on their qualifications, skills, and contributions.” Several other states boast similar measures to eradicate ideology.
Despite these bans, DEI initiatives remain rampant at many state universities across the country. The University of Texas paid a whopping $9.8 million to cover the salaries of 116 DEI staff in 2023. The school also hosted federally funded research on topics such as “shishteronormativity, the societal belief that everyone is cisgender and heterosexual.”
Many DEI programs are beginning to collapse at prominent schools. Research has revealed that this initiative may increase racial tensions and fail to increase diversity and overall student outcomes.
