‘Unlawful And Reckless’: Texas AG Sues To Stop Mass Voter Registration Mailer Program From Going Into Effect

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton filed a lawsuit Wednesday to stop a program that sends mass voter registration applications to residents.

Paxton sued the Bexar County Commissioners Court, which voted in favor of the program on Tuesday. According to A press release from his office: Republican prosecutors argue that registration applications are being sent en masse to residents regardless of whether they have requested such documents or whether they are otherwise eligible to vote, including non-citizens and illegal immigrants. According to Paxton's office, the program would hire a third-party company to print and distribute voter registration forms to unregistered residents in the county. The state's top prosecutor argues that distributing those forms to unidentified individuals could lead to non-citizens, such as foreign nationals or felons, attempting to register to vote.

Paxton further argued in his lawsuit that the program is inherently illegal because Texas counties lack the legal authority to print and distribute state voter registration applications.

The Texas Attorney General previously I sent a letter They sued the Bexar County Commission, threatening to sue them if they voted in favor of mass voter registration mailings.

“Despite being warned not to adopt this clearly illegal program of using taxpayer money to mail registration applications to people who may not be eligible to vote, Bexar County irresponsibly chose to violate the law,” Paxton said in a statement.

“This program is completely illegal and could lead to election fraud,” he continued. “It is a crime to register to vote when you are not eligible.”

The lawsuit comes as Republicans across the country are stepping up efforts to block foreign nationals from voting in US elections. Republican leaders in Alabama, Virginia, Texas and Ohio recently found evidence that there were more than 17,000 foreign nationals on their voter rolls, some of whom had already voted in the past.

America First Legal, a conservative group run by former Trump administration adviser Stephen Miller, filed a lawsuit Wednesday against all 15 Arizona counties, alleging they failed to comply with their legal obligations to purge foreign nationals from voter rolls, following a letter of demand sent to each county earlier this year.

More than 7 million foreign nationals have illegally crossed the U.S.-Mexico border since the Biden administration took office. According to Data from Customs and Border Protection (CBP). The White House also allowed hundreds of thousands of foreign nationals to enter the country through the CBP One app and the CHNV program, a controversial mass parole program that was suspended last month after evidence of widespread fraud.

When Paxton first sent his request to Bexar County, he pointed to the large influx of foreign nationals and the possibility that they would vote illegally.

“It is illegal and reckless for counties to use taxpayer money to indiscriminately send out voter registration forms without considering the recipients' qualifications and without legal authority,” Paxton said in a statement Monday. press release“It is especially disturbing that these counties are seeking to do so after the Biden-Harris Administration has allowed millions of undocumented immigrants into the country.”
