A winter storm warning has been extended through Tuesday night for northern Arizona above 5,500 feet, according to the National Weather Service.
The Arizona Department of Transportation announced Sunday evening that State Route 64 between Mileposts 241 and 268 near the Grand Canyon was closed due to winter weather conditions and related vehicle crashes.
Total snowfall from Sunday night through Tuesday evening is forecast to range from 8 inches to 2 feet in Flagstaff and Williams.
The northern rim of the Grand Canyon and the surrounding northern areas are expected to have 8 to 18 inches of total snowfall. Other areas such as Heber-Overgaard, Show Low, and Springerville can expect 2 to 6 inches of snow.
Snowfall is expected to begin Sunday night, but most parts of the High Country will receive less than an inch.
Paige Swenson, a meteorologist at the Flagstaff National Weather Service, said: “Monday afternoon is likely to be the heaviest of all, with a few more inches of snow in addition to the snow that has already fallen.
Monday is the most dangerous travel day, but roads will be slippery and covered in snow from Sunday through Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.
Winds will be around 15 to 25 mph through Tuesday, but gusts of 35 mph or more are possible, driving heavy snow and reducing visibility on the roads.
Rain and snowmelt could cause minor flooding in areas below 5,500 feet on Tuesday. Swenson warned that rockslides could occur in highly prone areas around Oak Creek Canyon, Highway 89 and Black He Canyon City south of Canyon City.
Power outages can occur in the north and east of the state due to winter storms.
In response to heavy snow, the first day of classes at Northern Arizona University Flagstaff Mountain Campus has been postponed to this Wednesday.
The National Weather Service recommends that residents “warm up” their vehicles, pack emergency kits, and avoid non-essential travel during high-impact winter storms Sunday through Tuesday. I’m here.
