Tucson, Arizona (KGUN) — Beginning June 1st, the upper Garden Canyon Road at Fort Huachuca will be closed to all motor vehicle traffic. Due to erosion, driving on the road is unsafe for all types of vehicles, and only critical mission and emergency vehicles are passable.
Hiking and mountain biking beyond the closed gates are permitted until further notice. The road beyond the gate is in poor condition and has limited turn-around points, making it difficult to tow a stranded or broken vehicle.
The road is a key access point for Fort Huachuca and for U.S. Army firefighters to prevent and extinguish high mountain wildfires. Officials say it’s important to preserve roads to allow emergency access.
Leisure visitors are encouraged to park by the central picnic area or in the dirt area near the upper Garden Canyon gates. Parking your car on dirt instead of grass reduces the chances of a wildfire from heating up your car’s undercarriage.
