US Air Force Base Security Guards Return Fire In Clash With Drive-By Shooter

According to the Associated Press, U.S. Air Force security personnel stationed at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in Texas engaged in a gunfight with an unidentified assailant early Saturday morning near the base's Chapman Training Wing.

The shooting happened around 4:30 a.m. when a sedan drove past the main gate and started firing, with security guards immediately returning fire. AP.

Base public affairs director Stephanie Antosh claimed there were multiple people in the vehicle. san antonio express news Authorities reportedly do not currently know the motive for the attack on the air base.

The gates to Chapman Annex were temporarily closed following the incident and drivers were reportedly instructed to use alternative routes. The gates reopened around 9:40 a.m. and the base continued operations under a medium level of security, according to the San Antonio Express-News.

San Antonio Police Department officers also responded to the scene and assisted in collecting evidence, according to the Associated Press.

The incident at the base follows the murder-suicide on April 8, 2016, committed by U.S. Air Force Sergeant Steven D. Bellino and his commanding officer, Lt. Col. William A. Schroeder. ReportedMilitary and civilian authorities responded and the base was placed on lockdown.
