The U.S. Navy posted, then deleted, Twitter images celebrating Independence Day, featuring Russian aircraft and warships against the backdrop of the Stars and Stripes, and was the target of ridicule from social media users.
The image shows the silhouette of a saluting soldier and the words “Happy Independence Day” in the foreground, a warship in silhouette looms in the background, and five fighter jets forming a V-shaped formation towards the top of the graphic. Herzinger described the warship as similar to the Soviet-era guided-missile destroyer Kashin-class DDG. The destroyer is no longer in service with Russia, but can still be seen in the Indian Navy’s fleet. The aircraft is believed to be a Soviet fourth-generation Sukhoi Su-27.
The Su-27, nicknamed “Flanker,” is currently used by the Ukrainian Air Force to intercept and intercept Russian-operated Su-27s and other fighter jets. according to in Smithsonian magazine.
