The average age in the United States has broken a historic record, rising to 38.9 years in 2022, according to Thursday’s report from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Births outnumbered deaths in 2022, but did not significantly affect the aging pattern of the population as a whole. “Without a rapid increase in the young population, the average age in the United States will continue to rise slowly but surely,” said Christy Wilder, a demographer with the Census Bureau’s Population Division.
The median age was highest in Maine at 44.8 years and lowest in Utah at 31.9 years. In Hawaii, the median age rose the most with her 0.4 years, bringing the population’s median age to 40.7 years.
The US population has also become more racially diverse. In 2022, the white population remained relatively stable, while other racial and ethnic groups increased. Asia’s population grew the fastest, and within a year he increased by 2.4%. The US Census Bureau reported that the Hispanic and Pacific Islander populations both increased by nearly 2 percent, while the black and American Indian populations increased by about 1 percent each.
