In a statement announcing the raid, CENTCOM said “ISIS leadership” was targeted.
“This operation targeted ISIS leadership and was designed to disrupt and degrade ISIS's ability to plan, organize, and execute attacks against Iraqi civilians, U.S. citizens, allies, and partners in the region and beyond,” CENTCOM said in a post to X. “Iraqi Security Forces continue to further leverage the locations we raided. ISIS remains a threat to the region, our allies, and the homeland. U.S. CENTCOM will continue to aggressively pursue these terrorists along with our coalition and Iraqi partners. We will provide more details as they become available.”
Military raids conducted jointly with Iraqi forces often involve U.S. special forces. According to CENTCOM's statement did not clarify which US military units were involved in this particular operation, although it told ABC News that about 2,500 US troops are in Iraq to train and advise Iraqi forces in the fight against ISIS.
ISIS-linked terrorists have already launched major attacks in Russia, Iran and other parts of the Middle East in 2024, and authorities thwarted a plot by an ISIS-linked group to attack a Taylor Swift concert in Vienna, Austria, earlier in August. Eight Tajik men with ties to ISIS have been arrested. Arrested Authorities, concerned the men may be planning attacks on US soil, conducted coordinated raids across the US in April, with the men expected to enter the US at the southern border between 2023 and 2024.
