Valley Meats Recalls Nearly 7,000 Pounds Of Beef Products Over Contamination Fears

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) reported Sunday that an Illinois-based food manufacturer recalled approximately 6,768 pounds of raw ground beef products due to concerns about bacterial contamination.

Valley Meats, LLC was concerned that their product was contaminated. Escherichia coli O157:H7, FSIS Statement Said.

“E. Escherichia coli O157:H7 is a potentially deadly bacteria that can cause dehydration, bloody diarrhea, and abdominal pain within 2 to 8 days (average 3 to 4 days) after exposure to the organism. “Most people recover within a week, but some people develop a type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS),” FSIS explained.

The FSIS statement also said children under the age of 5 and the elderly are most likely to be affected. Common symptoms include “easy bruising, pale complexion, and decreased urine output,” the statement said.

All of the various sizes were marked with the USDA label “EST.” 5712,” FSIS said in a statement to everyone who received the products, especially distributors in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, and Michigan, and anyone else to whom these centers intended to send the products. FSIS said it will notify customers of the recall and work with Valley Meats to ensure the product is removed from shelves.

FSIS said all raw meat, including raw and frozen meat, must be properly cooked before consumption. FSIS warned that ground beef is safe to consume only if it is cooked to a temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, as measured by a food thermometer.
