Victims identified in deadly I-40 pile-up crash near Williams

Juan Bertran Sanchez, born in Chino Valley in 1970, and Evelyn Davis, born in Ganado in 1961, were killed in a crash, Arizona DPS said.

The crash happened before 3:30pm I-40 near Mile Post 159.

The Arizona DPS says the crash occurred while the driver tried to avoid a “commercial vehicle with a jackknife.” At that time, another commercial vehicle jacked and slammed the other vehicle, killing Sanchez and Davis.

In total, the stack included 22 vehicles, including 13 passenger cars. Thirty-six people were involved in the crash, 16 were transported for treatment, and two Sanchez and Davis died.

The Arizona DPS detailed what happened, saying, “The collision first blocked a westbound I-40 in an area with guardrails on either side, including a jackknife tractor trailer, blocking the highway completely. The tractor trailer that hit quickly spread to other vehicles and burned for over 20 hours.

Investigators say the road was covered in snow and ice at the time of the crash.

What’s next:

The investigation into the crash remains active, and the DPS said the investigation would take a little time due to the number of people involved and the massive fire damage.

“Damage to roads and other infrastructure within the incident area as a result of the collision and subsequent fires is currently being evaluated by Adot engineers,” DPS said.
