VICTOR DAVIS HANSON: Retribution or Fairness?

National Intelligence Director Tulsi Gabbard has unveiled a collection of well-organized documents.

This new information sheds light on how the Obama administration’s intelligence and investigations worked to undermine the 2016 Trump campaign. Additionally, these efforts affected President Trump’s transition from 2016 to 2017 and his first three years in office.

The released documents provide fresh insights into what has become more widely recognized over the last decade.

Reports from Congressional Committees, Special Prosecutors, and Inspectors have largely affirmed the overall narrative of the activities that started in 2015-16.

Supported later by the FBI, CIA, and top intelligence officials, Hillary Clinton’s campaign sought to propagate the misleading narrative that Trump conspired with Russia to win the 2016 election unfairly.

When their campaign strategy didn’t alter the 2016 outcome, the Obama administration intensified efforts during the transition to undermine Trump’s presidency.

Special advisor Robert Mueller’s “All-Star” legal team found no evidence of an in-person conspiracy between Trump and Putin to hijack the election. However, his investigations spanned 22 months during Trump’s first term, marked by persistent leaks and rumors of imminent convictions.

By 2020, the frustrated intelligence community and the original sources absurdly claimed that Hunter Biden’s allegedly incriminating laptop contained “all goals” of Russian interference.

So, what’s different about Gabbard’s recent disclosure?

Firstly, prior to Donald Trump’s inauguration in 2016, Obama held an unusual meeting with his outgoing intelligence and investigative teams.

Contrary to the four-year Democratic narrative that the “18 Intelligence Agencies” had found evidence of a Russian conspiracy, the leading officials reportedly informed Obama there was no such evidence of a Trump-Putin collusion.

Nevertheless, President Obama allegedly instructed them to disregard those assessments and instead promote the narrative of Trump’s collusion with Russia.

The leaks persisted, media hysteria reached new heights, and soon Mueller along with his left-leaning legal team targeted President Trump.

Further new details indicate that for some time, CIA Director Brennan and his Oval Office colleagues were puzzled as to why Russians were falsely accused of colluding with Trump to undermine the election.

Sure, Russian operatives, much like their Chinese counterparts, aimed to disrupt American institutions through methods like email hacking and the spread of misinformation. Yet, they likely wondered why Hillary Clinton made such blatantly false accusations, and why the Obama administration acted on them.

Obama has since claimed that these new allegations are beneath the dignity of the presidency.

However, in stark contrast to the new information, he should have publicly dismissed the assessments made by his peers in December 2016 and clearly stated that he never instructed his intelligence heads to pursue a conspiracy narrative with Putin.

Between 2015 and 2020, the actions of the Clinton Campaign, Obama’s appointees, former academic chiefs, and sympathetic media figures severely undermined the Trump Campaign in 2016.

They hindered the 2017 presidential transition and, arguably, damaged Trump’s chances in the 2020 election.

In summary, the fallout from the alleged Trump-Putin conspiracy includes:

  • Encouraging so-called “experts” in 2020 to shamelessly mislead the American public by alleging that Hunter Biden’s innocent laptop was merely another product of Russian interference aimed at assisting Trump’s re-election.
  • Media complicity was evident as journalists collaborated with current and former Obama officials to propagate discredited documents like The Steele Dossier. During the 2020 campaign, the FBI and social media platforms attempted to censor accurate reports about the legitimacy of the laptop.
  • These operations could have serious ramifications for U.S. foreign policy. Russia, an adversary, presents a challenge for the United States.

However, by falsely asserting direct Russian intervention in two elections in alliance with Trump, officials from the Obama era and Clinton campaign activists jeopardized Trump’s credibility in maintaining functional relations with a nuclear Russia.

Moreover, the deception and extraordinary operations of the FBI and CIA only reinforce the notion among Russians that they cannot trust the U.S. government.

Obama, Brennan, Clapper, Comey, and others likely face no legal repercussions for the damage inflicted on American institutions and foreign policy.

Still, that shouldn’t exempt them from continued scrutiny and efforts to reveal the complete truth.
