Scope: Why Generalists Win in a Specialized World

Author Talk with David Epstein

Many professionals believe that anyone who wants to develop a skill, play an instrument, or lead in their field should start early, focus intensely, and spend as much time as possible planning. They argue that you need to practice. But a closer look at research on the world’s top performers, from professional athletes to Nobel laureates, shows that early specialization is the exception, not the rule.

David Epstein surveyed the world’s most successful athletes, artists, musicians, inventors, forecasters and scientists. He found that generalists, not specialists, excel in most areas, especially those that are complex and unpredictable. Rather than focusing on one thing, generalists often juggle many interests to slow them down. They’re also more creative and agile, and can make connections that their more professional peers can’t see.

David Epstein is the author of the New York Times #1 bestseller Range: Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World and the New York Times bestseller The Sports Gene, both translated into more than 20 languages. His writings have been lauded by organizations ranging from the National Academy of Sciences, the Academy of Engineering and Medicine, to the Professional His Journalists Association, the National Center for Journalism on the Disabled, and have been named Best of His American Science and Nature Writing. . Anthology. His article on sudden cardiac death in athletes, “Following the Trail of Broken Hearts,” was named one of his top 100 articles of the last 100 years by Columbia Journalism graduates. He holds a master’s degree in environmental science and journalism and lives in Washington, DC.
