Watchmaker Accuses Former Employees Of Selling Fake ‘Frankenstein’ Timepiece For Over $3 Million

Swiss luxury watchmaker Omega has alleged that three former employees were involved in a conspiracy to sell fake Speedmaster watches to the manufacturer in November 2021.

An advertisement for the auction described the watch as “an important early stainless steel chronograph wristwatch with broad arrow hands and a chocolate brown ‘tropical’ dial.” However, according to CNN, the collectibles were later discovered to be mostly “Frankenstein” watches assembled from genuine Omega parts. According to a Phillips ad, the Omega Speedmaster (reference number 2915) “is arguably Omega’s most important historical model to date” and “is a race car driver, engineer and timepiece. Incredibly useful for professionals.” Neil Armstrong used a Speedmaster during his first-ever moon landing. According to the Smithsonian InstitutionArmstrong watches are kept in the museum.

CNN reports that former Omega employees will face criminal charges after admitting to being involved in the sale of “Frankenstein” watches.
