A Republican-led effort to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorcas is likely to fail, despite the narrow Republican control of the House.
Republicans who were critical of Mallorcas’ handling of border security called for his impeachment as a way to remove him. It doesn’t get enough support in the House of Representatives.
Gates, a major supporter of Mallorca’s impeachment, Said The Washington Times on Monday said, “We don’t have the right to vote.”
When asked if impeachment supporters would be able to gather enough support in the House, Gates added, “I don’t think we’re getting any closer to a vote.”
Rep. Pat Fallon (Republican-Texas) introduced Impeachment article against Mayorkas in January, and brought to you by Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Arizona) Additional articles of impeachment in February.
Both impeachment articles accused Mallorcas of neglecting its obligations to maintain operational control of the US border during a record number of months of illegal border crossings. Fallon’s impeachment article explicitly states that Mallorcas implemented the catch-and-release directive and, through his leadership, “recklessly released” more than 1,000,000 illegal immigrants to the United States.
To date, Fallon’s impeachment articles have been collected 41 sponsoring companieson the other hand, in Biggs’ impeachment article 32 sponsoring companies.
An impeachment effort would require the almost unanimous support of Republicans in the House of Representatives, who hold a small majority. The impeachment effort will face an even harder chance in the Senate. A simple majority is required to approve articles of impeachment in the House, but a two-thirds vote is required. Senate Majority Convict an impeached official. All 49 Republicans in the Senate and at least 18 of his Democrats or independents must join the effort to formally remove Mr. Mallorca from office.
House Republicans Tries to Build Impeachment Case
Gates has hinted at a lack of support for the impeachment of Mallorca, but he and other Republicans have tried to advance the impeachment cause.
Fallon’s impeachment article alleges that Majorcas knowingly provided perjury, false and misleading testimony to Congress about having operational control over the border.
Last week, the House Judiciary Committee held a hearing on border security at Yuma, Arizona City Hall, but Democrats on the committee boycotted it. At that open-air hearing, Gates specifically asked witness Jonathan Lynes, the Yuma County supervisor, if Majorcas had ever lied to him.
“Yes,” Lines replied.
“And what was the lie about?” Gates asked.
Lines said Mayorkas had committed to addressing the border gap when it toured the Yuma border sector about a year ago. “He promised to specifically mention ‘9 of the 11 Yuma gaps’ after reviewing the border both from the ground and from the air. ”
“And how many of those gaps have been addressed?” Gates asked.
“Until now, so far? None,” Lines replied.
Gaetz continued to question Lines by voicing support for Biggs’ impeachment article.
Later in the hearing, Rep. Jeff Van Drew (RN.J.) also said he supported impeachment of Majorcas. I deserve not to be there anymore. ”
NTD Television reached out to Gaetz’s office for further comment but did not receive a response prior to publication of this article.
