WEEK SEVENTEEN LEGISLATIVE UPDATE, 5/6/23

                  LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

Slow and methodical was the way this past week went at the Legislature.  Our leaders came into Floor sessions long enough to make an appearance and make a little chatter, and back to their homes they went.

The legislators were on the Floor long enough to pass a single Bill, HB2432 out of the House and onto the Governor’s desk on 5/3/23 for signing or vetoing.  There were also 17 Bills that made it through the Senate Floor, also on 5/3 and onto the Governor’s

One more Resolution, SCR1021 (United States; Taiwan; trade partnership) also made it to the Secretary of State.

Do you remember Senate Bill 1117 introduced by Senator Steve Kaiser?  This Bill kinda died on the vine…but resprouted as a trifecta splitting off three Striker Bills, HB2536, SB1161, and SB1163.  Whatever you may hear or think you know about these Bills, it is not enough!

Go below and read CITIZEN LEGISLATOR and the attachments.  This needs some major CALL TO ACTION NOW!!!  The vote will most likely come up next week and we need to have a say on THIS!  Contact ALL the Legislators and convey to them that they need to read and understand the purpose behind these Bills.  Is this really the solution or another mask covering the issue of the unaffordable housing crisis.

The biggest news of the week is that the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors met today and filled one of the two legislative vacancies.  They appointed Julie Willoughby to replace expelled former member, Liz Harris. Willoughby is an ER nurse in Chandler and narrowly lost the election to Harris in November.  Former Democrat Senator Raquel Teran’s seat remains vacant.

                VETOES/NEW LAWS/CURRENT BILLS ON GOV’S DESK

Governor Hobbs “The Veto Queen” veto list stands at 78 VETOES!   Hobbs stands at 112 Bills she has signed.  With the Floor action already mentioned, the Veto Queen has 18 Bills awaiting her decision.

The Legislature still has no intentions of closing up shop for a loonng time.  The Budget is still with the Governor and Leadership, with the Dems holding out for whatever they can get.

            TWO NEW LEGISLATORS

The Board of Supervisors should be making a decision on who the new Legislator will be in LD13 to replace Representative Liz Harris.  And with a Democrat resigning from the Senate, of Senator Raquel Terán, LD26, looks like we will be welcoming two new legislators soon.

           CITIZEN LEGISLATOR

The Trifecta Proposal.  Please read the attached documents as it will explain to you the proposal of the combination of two Bills (HB2536 and SB1163) and SB1161 on Senator Kaiser’s proposal for unaffordable housing.  I have attempted to simplify the idea, but the decision is up to you whether this is a solution to the crisis or not

I am only forwarding information to you and let you decide.

The three Bills that are up for a vote possibly next week.  Many of the legislators plan on voting for this Bill without a lick of information supporting their vote.  Both House Speaker Ben Toma and Senate President Warren Petersen are a YES vote and their responses to these Bills, is that “this is better than the original version.”

REALLY?  Since when, and where is it written that we need to vote yes to take the best of the worst!  All three Bills need to be revised.

It is about time that someone explains to our Leadership what it means to listen to their constituency and not vote their own “AGENDA.”

The RTS (Request to Speak) system is a necessary component to our legislative process.  This is an excellent way to share your positions on a particular Bill and let your legislator know that you support his/her legislation.  Please review this site and make sure you know how to use it properly.  The legislators depend a lot on your opinions and this is where you share them.

Once again, as a gentle reminder to all of the people who just joined these updates, this is how to read the attachments.  All the Bills listed on the attachments are mostly ALL the Republican Introduced Bills.

The Bills highlighted in Green are the GOP Bills I monitor on a daily basis.  The Bills highlighted in Gray, are ones introduced by LD2 legislators, Senator Kaiser and Representative Wilmeth.

And, the Bills highlighted with yellow in the status and date columns, are noted for your review to see their progression in the legislative process.  All Bills are up to date through 4//23.

And yes, I did remove most all the Bills highlighted in Blue that were Democrat sponsored.  If the Bills were not moving out of Committee like the Republican sponsored Bills, they have been removed from the monitoring cycle.
